Tesco to create “eco-store”
Tesco has never had a particularly good record when it comes to sustainability. Despite a few attempts to cut down on the millions of plastic bags it hands out every year, it is rarely in the press for its green efforts. The UK’s biggest supermarket, however, is making a big step towards environmental responsibility with its planned Holmfirth store, showing that you can work in retail and still have a green job.
Designers of the store promise that the new Tesco outlet will be the greenest supermarket in Yorkshire, and maybe even the most environmentally friendly in the UK.
Several eco-friendly design ideas have gone into making the store more sustainable. Its roof will be covered in moss to provide more CO2 intake and a home for wildlife. The store itself will be built from natural materials that will not harm the environment as much as cheaper components. There will also be on-site technology to help power the supermarket, and a rainwater storage system, which will keep rainwater to be used in toilets and to feed plants.
Tesco corporate affairs manager Jennifer Duncan said: “We recognise that Holmfirth is a special location and we understand the importance of complementing the existing scenery, so we are proposing what we hope will be Yorkshire’s greenest supermarket.
“We are excited about our proposals for Holmfirth, but before we finalise the plans we want to hear the views of the community. Listening to residents is a vital part of the planning process and we take all views very seriously.”
With even giant retailers like Tesco getting on board with green initiatives, it will not be long before even jobs outside of the environmental sector can be classed as part of an environmental career. Keep checking JuicyJobs.biz for more news on green jobs and advice on the recruitment market.
